I used to think of art as a solo act. I went into my studio, closed the door, put on music, and painted. Just me and my Muse, creating sacred work. When I was ready to show it to the world, I found a place. A group exhibition, a local venue, a rented space.
But nothing much came of it, other than a few lines on my curriculum vitae. After 30+ years, and a gallery of art on my walls (and in the garage), my motivation sagged. I wasn’t as interested in going into my studio alone.

Then I started to connect more with others. Not just connect, but serve. I volunteered at the local arts center. I started teaching students to draw, paint, and find their own inner compass. I wrote a book about using creativity to stop self-harm.
My art became more communal. I ‘m still alone when I paint in my studio. But now that studio is filled with the energy of students. A young person I’m mentoring is helping me paint a wine barrel for a fundraiser. A show I co-curated gave an opportunity to artists who rarely get to show in galleries. My book is helping those who struggle find relief. Sometimes, they reach out to me from different places around the world. A clearer sense of purpose now drives my work, and I’m fired up to paint again.
Yesterday, I helped organize a lowrider festival for the arts. Cars, dancing, music, food, and Chicano art. I’ve observed how the community comes together to support and celebrate each other. Creativity and culture are intertwined. The art is political, emotional, narrative, personal, communal.
The experience reminded me that we are all connected. And art is a beautiful way to come together and remember. We’re not islands fighting for scarce resources. We’re stronger and more creative when we join together for the good of all.
Creativity is an act of love.
With Love and Light,
Maggie
