A month ago, I wrote about my creative process, and how I'd broken it down into three stages: Create-Connect-Share. I explored each of these areas, and what happens when we neglect any one of them.
Together, these three stages make up a state of flow. When I'm creating AND making connections with my work AND sharing it with others, I'm in the flow. Of what?
I heard an Indigenous tribal leader describe it this way: the connection between Creator and Creation is Creativity.
It's the active current between material and spirit. Creativity with a capital C.

When I create solely for myself, I get a jolt of current and then put it away.
When I create and make connections within myself and the world around me, it gives the work more meaning.
When I create, connect, and share the work with others, it "plugs in" to a bigger current of Creativity. I join the conversation. I'm in flow, which is ongoing, never-ending, as long as I work on all 3 aspects. This newsletter is one of the ways I sustain that flow. When I share my process of creating and connecting, you resonate and give me feedback, which inspires me to keep going.

Sometimes, I exhibit. Interestingly, that's my least favorite way to share--but a necessary aspect of getting my work out there. More often, I do private commissions. I love seeing clients' responses when they see the work we co-created.
The main way I sustain flow is by teaching. I share my gifts so other artists can see things differently. They learn to draw and paint with more confidence, more excitement. They make connections with their Muse, their purpose. Which inspires them to share their work so they can join the endless current.
Student work: a drawing study by Brian, who never drew anything before working with me
Realizing all this has inspired me to step up my offerings so I can share more of this avenue into flow. On top of next month's drawing class, I'm adding a 6-week workshop for those who want to focus on completing art: Taking a Piece from Start to Finish. It's perfect if you've already taken some of my classes and want to apply what you've learned; or if you're embarking on a new series and want to clarify your direction.
For those who want to join the ongoing flow, I'm also building an online studio for those who want to create continually, check in with others, learn new skills, discuss interesting topics, and address blocks. Anyone who jumps into that tribe will have free access to any of my workshops. Coming soon.
A new painting by Cindy Wood, a student who took "Create a Signature Series" workshop and had a breakthrough in her work! I can't take credit but I can support her journey.
In the meantime, I hope you had a nice Father's Day. Happy creating...

Beatrix Potter created one of my favorite characters: Peter Rabbit. She basically started the children's book industry in the UK. Others had written and illustrated books for kids, but she was the first to design plush, toys, and games based on her books. She was a successful entrepreneur at a time when women couldn't even go to college. Her books have sold over 250 million copies around the world and are still being read today.
To me, these adorable little characters were real. I pored over the tiny books. I still have my set of Peter Rabbit stories. Her world of animals felt safe.
With love and light,
Maggie
